When Should I Bring My Baby To The Dentist For The First Time?

The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends that your child visit a dentist for the first time as soon as their first tooth has erupted, or by their first birthday. Issues like tooth decay and gum disease can affect even young kids, so regular oral exams and cleanings are critical for preserving their oral health.

In addition, bringing your child to Green Leaf Dental allows you to get answers to common questions, such as how to care for your child’s oral health, what to expect from the teething process, how to brush your child’s teeth and gums properly, and more. By staying informed, you can ensure that you provide your infant or toddler with the care they need.

What Can I Expect From My Infant’s First Appointment?

If you are bringing in an infant or very young child, Dr. Yoni will perform an oral exam, check each tooth in the mouth, and ensure that dental development milestones are being met. If your child has most of their baby teeth, a teeth cleaning may also be recommended.

Older children who have all of their baby teeth will undergo a gentle cleaning, and one of our dentists will also perform a comprehensive oral exam to identify any potential issues with their teeth, gums, or oral development. Your child may also have x-rays taken of their mouths, if necessary.

Once the exam is over, Dr. Yoni will discuss their findings with you, and provide you with information about next steps, if necessary. Our Seattle children dentists will also answer any questions you might have about your child’s oral health. Since cavities can start even before 12 months old, one of the most valuable parts of the first visit is helping parents identify habits that will help prevent tooth problems before they start.

What is a “Dental Home” And What are the benefits of having One?

Our goal at Green Leaf Dental is to become a dental “home” where you and your children can get expert, informed dental care throughout every period of your life.

A dental home will help you and your children feel more comfortable and safe at the dentist because you’ll be familiar with the process, and you’ll get to know us on a personal level. This also helps you get better care because Dr. Yoni will have complete records about your child’s oral health, which can help them identify and diagnose potential issues before they become severe. If an emergency ever arises, it can be comforting to know that you have a place to call.

You’ll also be able to encourage better lifelong oral habits to help your children preserve and safeguard their oral health throughout their entire youth, adolescence, and adulthood. The team at Green Leaf Dental would feel honored to be your dental home. Whether you’re in Seward Park, Columbia City, Beacon Hill or Rainier Valley, you can contact us for an appointment right away at (206) 316-2351 to get started.
