Can You Fix An Overbite With Invisalign?

Overbites are a rather common tooth alignment issue that brings many people to the orthodontist every year. But if you want to avoid the awkward stages of traditional metal braces, then you may be able to get your treatment in the form of clear aligners and Invisalign.

Thanks to Invisalign treatments in Seattle, many people can get perfectly straight and aligned teeth without the traditional metal braces. However, if you’ve been looking into Invisalign, then you probably came across many articles explaining how these aligners may not be able to treat all bite and alignment issues.

So, can Invisalign fix an overbite? Find out the answer in this short blog post!

Type of Overbites

Overbite is a bit of an umbrella term used to describe two alignment issues:

  • Vertical overbite - the top teeth significantly overlapping the bottom teeth
  • Horizontal overbites - the top teeth slightly stick out over the bottom teeth

Overbites can also be caused by either dental or skeletal issues. Dental overbites mean tooth misalignment is caused directly by the teeth. While the skeletal overbites mean your jawbone structure is leading to the overbite.

More than simply an aesthetic issue, overbites can lead to other problems, such as:

  • Difficulties with eating and chewing your food properly
  • Speech impediments
  • Jaw pain, etc,

This is why many people seek to address their overbite and often opt for metal braces or Invisalign.

How Does Invisalign Treat Overbites?

Invisalign is a set of clear aligners that go over your natural teeth to slowly shift their position until they reach their most optimal placement. In the case of overbites, your orthodontist may use the clear aligners by themselves, especially if the overbite is caused by a tooth alignment issue, or you may also require Invisalign buttons and elastics to support the treatment.

These are small attachments that get bonded to your teeth to provide the Invisalign trays with additional pressure on the teeth, to slowly change how your jaw is aligned.

Unfortunately, not all overbites can be addressed through Invisalign. The only way to know for sure is to book an appointment with an orthodontist and get your specific case reviewed.

Based on an assessment of your jawbone and teeth positions, the orthodontist will recommend the best course of action to fix your overbite. This can either be Invisalign, especially for milder cases, but severe cases of overbites may require traditional metal braces, at least for the beginning of your treatment.
